Diving with Kei Pirate Divers
The divecentre
Kei Pirate Divers is the first and only divecentre on the Kei islands. To be honest I was surprised to find one here at all but Eva and Janosch opened their shop a little over a year ago.
They have transformed their home into a small divecentre with everything you need for a professional diving business. From the most professional compressor room, to state of the art equipment this German couple has established a centre for everyone’s diving needs.Kei Pirate divers is German in many ways. Diver safety is their priority and this is mirrored in the quality of their equipement and staff. Considering the remote location of the centre they have created something many would call impossible.
We were welcomed at Kei Pirate divers with coffee and tea and talked with the owners, while sitting in beanbags before sorting out our equipment. Their story is really amazing, Eva told us all about the Kei islands and opening Kei Pirate divers. If you go here you should definitely take the time to talk with them about their story.
If you have any interest in their dive centre and want some more information check out their website: Kei Pirate Divers
The Kei Pirate Divers team
Just to be clear, the post that I’m writing is not sponsored content but merely a testimony to the experience we had. Eva and Janosch opened and manage the divecentre but they do not do it alone. They are helped by Niklas, a very experienced dive guide who took us on the dive and he is just a very nice guy. And Edo who just didn’t stop smiling the whole time that we were there. If I understood the story correctly they worked together on a liveaboard and then he came with them to the Kei islands.
I of course can’t forget the most important members of the kei Pirate divers team; Willi and Theo. They are 2 dogs whom have been taken in by Eva and Janosch. Willi is a bit shy and has got not 2 but 4 balls which makes him quite special, and Theo is a very sweet and strong dog. They will keep you company before and after your dive.
The dive
This was my first dive in a while so we decided that it would be best to go easy and go to the house reef. Just a short boat ride from the shore we did a backroll into the water and got ready to descend. The water was warm (however Eva disagreed) around 28 degrees. The tropical water was clear but the visibility was not at its best and still then it was around 18m.
We descended and explored the house reef that was booming with corals and small marine life. Niklas has an eagle eye when it comes to spotting small marine life and he made sure we didn’t miss out.
We explored the wall for a whole 59 minutes and although there’s not a lot of big fishes but we did manage to see a sea cobra and I got my mouth cleaned by a shrimp. The feeling of its little legs tickling your mouth is something I’ll never forget. Unfortunately I did not manage to capture this moment on camera but who knows maybe next time. There are parts in the shallow waters of the Kei islands where corals are dead and no life can be found but the dive spots around the island are blooming with some of the healthiest corals I’ve ever seen.
We had an amazing diving experience with kei Pirate divers and a lot of that was thanks to the professionally organized dive, the diving equipment and of course the awesome corals all around.
If you’re looking for a place where everything remains to be explored and you want to be part of that, go to the Kei islands and dive with the Kei Pirate divers.

Hey Yanique! This is really cool! Thank you for the blog. It helped me decide to go for a really well organized Diving certification course with people who really enjoy themselves and their work. Nice! I’ll look into that tomorrow. And the video with the turtle… Thanks. Really helping me realize I totally want to learn how to dive!
